Quests & Expeditions
Quests & Expeditions
The Discovery Prep experience is a blend of college preparatory academics, real-world hands-on projects (Quests), and national and international travel (Expeditions). When combined, these experiences prepare students for more than just college applications: they are prepared for college.
Quest-based is project-based learning
Quests, the backbone of the academic program, afford authentic opportunities for students to expand on core learning in math, reading, writing and serving others. Quests can involve starting a business, exploring contemporary issues, participating in local apprenticeships, conducting data-driven research, dramatizing historical events, performing on stage, building complex machines, traveling to local exhibits, serving in international communities, and competing in debates.
We take our learning on the road
The school year begins with students and faculty embarking on a purposeful, one-week Expedition. Over the course of the trip, students participate in team building and leadership training activities, and formalize their goals for the year. Spring trips reinforce what students have been learning in their classrooms. Our students have studied Macbeth here in SoCal and then performed the play in Scotland at Cawdor Castle! Students enrolled in a History of the Americas class found themselves at the foot of Chichen Itza! These opportunities and more await your child at Discovery Prep.
The Senior Capstone Experience
Quests and Expeditions culminate in the students’ senior year, where they embark on a year-long Capstone project. They delve into an area of particular interest; just prior to graduation, they present their learning at a seminar . During the final three-weeks of their senior year, seniors immersing themselves in full-time, off campus internships or mentorships. Seniors who successfully complete the Capstone Experience receive a Diploma of Distinction at graduation.
