      Academics and Arts

The Discovery Prep School’s academic and arts program teaches students how to develop creativity, curiosity, perseverance, compassion, self-advocacy, and courage in a holistic college preparatory environment.

      Quests and Expeditions

Quest-based experiences empower students to explore meaning and purpose via deep dives into topics of personal interest. Expeditionary learning connects students to topics covered in the classroom.  At another school, your child might learn about biology with a textbook and an occasional classroom lab; at Discovery Prep,  we bridge the classroom learning with real world experiences. What better way to learn about marine life and coastal ecology than scuba diving in the U.S. Virgin Islands? Together, Quests and Expeditions are fantastic opportunities to show growth, to be a leader, and to think and work meaningfully towards future goals.

      Serving Others

Service learning is an integral part of our program as it serves to further the Discovery Prep Core Value of Compassion. The majority of our service work is developed by the student-led Service Committee which presents monthly. Whole-school options in social/human service and ecological/ environmental service.

      Upper School

      Curriculum

Our program begins with a deep exploration of biology and chemistry, where the learning focuses on micro-scale, theoretical and math-intensive concepts, such as cell biology, biochemistry, organ chemistry, chemical thermodynamics, and acid-base chemistry.  Supporting these required science classes are an evolving and dynamic set of electives, often developed by faculty based on student interest or on personal interest, such as tidepool biology, plant identification, astronomy, computer sciences, and calculus-based physics.  As a faculty, our goal is to give students the skills to make informed decisions about what branches and aspects of science appeal to them, and allow them the flexibility and opportunity to explore courses beyond what is typically offered to high school students.

Our upper school math program is designed to challenge students to think critically and creatively about real-world problems, while also developing the mathematical skills required to succeed in college and life beyond. Students will find themselves using technology in class, studying in groups, competing in contests, and working on the board solving engaging problems. We believe that all students can be solid mathematics students: we must simply discover the pace at which each student learns best.

We offer both advanced and college preparatory coursework. Problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum is centered around real-world scenarios that require students to apply mathematical concepts to solve complex problems.

Our math department’s  goal is for students to gain confidence in their ability to make sense of a problem, and once a problem is understood, to apply mathematical knowledge and tools strategically during the problem-solving process, and to persist in solving the problem.

Our world language program is designed to foster cultural awareness, develop language proficiency, and provide students with the skills they need to communicate effectively in a global society. Our experienced faculty members are fluent in their respective languages and are passionate about teaching students how to read, write, speak, and understand Spanish and ASL. Along with these two on-campus options, our online language learning labs afford our upper students the opportunity to study ten other world languages.

Our world language program also provides students with opportunities to participate in cultural activities that enhance their understanding and appreciation of Spanish and ASL-speaking communities. Students can join language clubs and attend language-related field trips and events.

Upper school history covers historical events from the Renaissance to today. Students are encouraged to analyze events by understanding bias and historical perspective through interviews, firsthand accounts, videos, secondary sources and audio accounts. The goal of the humanities department is to help develop well-informed students who challenge ideas and share their thoughts on current events domestic and international. Students learn through focusing on active participation, engagement in class discussions and by writing analytical responses to historical accounts. The history department also offers a variety of academic electives in the social sciences: Human Psychology, Economics, Film Studies, and Art and Music History. Advanced work is available for students seeking more challenge.

The purpose of Human Development is to help students become healthy, moral and socially responsible adults. The department’s curriculum addresses topics relevant to adolescent growth and is designed to give teenagers the knowledge, self-awareness, and empathy they’ll need to live a meaningful life and make positive change in the world.

This full-year course is designed to build a foundation in well-being and service-leadership. Beginning in ninth grade, fall semester, topics include time management, school expectations, extracurricular programming, and personal values. The course focuses on self-awareness, responsibility, and self-advocacy, including boundary training. Discussions include issues in human relationships, personal growth, and good decision-making. In the winter and spring, the course aims to disseminate clear and accurate information about sexuality, reproduction, birth control, health, communicable diseases, and drug education, and to encourage respect for others regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or other differences. The approach is designed to promote positive communication skills, values clarification, and effective decision-making skills.

Under the careful guidance of the Director of Wellness and Student Support, each student participates in our bookend Human Development program, which includes a 9th grade wellness program and a senior year seminar in Leadership.

Graduates of Discovery Prep are prepared for both the academic reading and writing in the college environment, and primed for the benefits of a literate, well- examined life.  Students study fiction and non-fiction in a variety of genres and produce their own work in those genres, consuming and creating original content.  So they read poetry, narratives, and editorials with a critical eye to rhetorical technique, and then, in consideration of those model texts, students produce poetry, narratives, and editorials of their own. Students use composition as a tool for discovering ideas and deepening analysis.  They also learn to modify and structure their own work, considering different audiences and purposes.  Ultimately, the curriculum is meant to help the students become confident communicators, especially in the written word; critical thinkers for 21st century literacies; and empathetic citizens who can participate in an increasingly diverse world.

Our fitness and wellness program promotes the development of each student’s physical well-being and full human potential. We place the emphasis upon personal and cooperative development rather than competition. In order to meet each student’s fitness goals, we offer a variety of fitness electives: mountain biking, yoga, mixed martial arts, weightlifting and rock-climbing. All students are required to complete two years in a fitness and wellness elective.

Discovery’s Upper School Fine Arts Department offers a variety of advanced arts education opportunities in the disciplines of Visual, Performing, and Culinary Arts. Each program nurtures and celebrates self-expression and personal growth. The Arts is uniquely capable of furthering student success and providing life long skills by encouraging creative thinking, problem solving, adaptability, and commitment. While some students are honing their skills to pursue a career in the arts, others are enjoying exploring new ways of thinking and discovering their artistic strengths. Our arts educators strive to provide individual and collaborative curriculum to help students grow and develop a lasting love and appreciation of the arts.

      Discovery Arts Cafe:

Students are given the opportunity to participate in Discovery’s annual Arts Cafe. Original student work featured during this event include a Gallery Walk containing a wide variety of visual art pieces, a Tasting Experience featuring student culinary creations, and a Live Performance showcasing music, theater, and dance.
